Silver King: A trip to SuperioR, Arizona
Arizona is full of ghost towns and about 60 miles east of Phoenix is one of them. Back in 1875 a small discovery of silver lead to the foundation of a mining corporation, The Silver King. From 1975 until '88 the Silver King was shipping over 30 tons of silver per month at roughly $1,000 per ton. After the decline of silver residents remained and the town was officially given the name of Superior, Arizona in 1900. Ten years later the Magnum Copper Company began copper mining near Superior and for the next 60 years would become the lifeline of it's civilization. The mine officially closed in 1996 and left many fleeing from high un-employment rates. A few remaining residents are hopeful that the mine will re-open someday. A plateu of land above the town known as Oak Flats is currently up for extortion, as the government works with a private company to extract copper from the area. Native American's have organized protest camps and marches to protect their sacred land. However, if the Copper Resolution project passes the Magnum Copper Company could be hiring in the near future.
